Attorney Speaks Out on Floor Care Infection Control
In an attempt to find ways to prevent slip and fall accidents, minimize the spread of infection, and protect facility managers and building service contractors from potential safety and liability law suits, attorney Lisa Wade, with the law firm of Orr & Reno, Concord, NH, discovered ways these problems—and their legal implications—can be avoided.
“In my career as an attorney, I have defended a variety of institutions from claims arising out of slip and fall accidents on their premises, nosocomial infections (illness acquired while in a hospital or medical center), and worker injury and fatigue,” says Wade. “Work on such cases has led me to search for specific janitorial products that can reduce or eliminate these risks.”
Wade has defended healthcare centers in nosocomial infection cases and knows first-hand the huge legal and medical costs this problem can cause healthcare organizations, their executives, and risk-managers. Annual estimates of these expenses have been assessed as high as $3.5 billion. *
Studies have indicated that one-third of all nosocomial infections can be prevented through effective infection control programs. “I have found that a mopping system that dispenses clean mops heads on demand is a tool that, when used properly, can help in this regard since contaminated cleaning solution and dirty mop heads are eliminated in the cleaning process,” says Wade.
Wade referenced a mopping system that dispenses up to 40 dry and/or chemically treated flat mops on demand, guaranteeing that the user always has a clean mop head. This can dramatically reduce the spread of infection as well as the related medical and legal expenses, according to Wade. “I have found that holding this type of cleaning process up in front of a jury is persuasive evidence to rebut a nosocomial infection claim.”
